Mario Olla was
born in florence on the 27th of august 1924.
He had hardly taken the vocational diploma ,when he begann to
work at the factory SMI, located in Campo Tizzoro. Here he forged
his political and anti-fascist belief, which carried him to
serve in the partisan brigade (g.bozzi) and carried him to volunteer
for the liberation army in legnano division. He had lived throughout
the years of resistance, supported by an ideal, in which he
had always believed; living in a free, democratic and equal
country. He began his public political engagement in the year
1952: he had been council man of S.Marcello's townhall and member
of the committee until the year 1968, year in which he was elected
as mayor. He had held this office for quite 14 years. During
his mandate he had listened to the needs of his fellow-citizens
and he had promoted social initiatives for migrants. He was
hardly elected as president of comunita' montana in the year
1981, when he faced the problems, wheighing heavly on the whole
district. In the passing time the pistoia mountain such as other
tuscany areas, poor of economic resourses, had been charaterized
by continuos migration flows. Since mario olla estabilished
that many people from tuscany lived far away from their country,
he wanted institutions to committ themselves to take initiatives
for the reconstruction of the relations with people living outside
and to make them closer. Inside the district itself he promoted
a law for people from tuscany abroad, approved in the year 1977.
Moreover this law caused the birth of the council, a body for
the protection of the rights of migrants . Mario Olla had been
its vicarious president until his death, which happened on the
14th of august 1991. He committed himself for migrants completly.
In fact through his frequent travels abroad he made the relations
among people from tuscany closer and closer, he knew the different
realities of the world, he tightened contacts with the old and
new generations, listening to their requests and needs. inside
the institutions he was the spokesman of the migrants and he
gave more value to the roule, played by migrants in the society
and strengthened their identity. Many fellow-citizens but even
young men, to whom mario olla particularly addressed for the
rediscovery of their past , haven't forgotten his untiring activity,
his tenacity. The centre for the collection of papers on migration
is obviously named after mario olla so that the memory of his
life will unceasingly remain printed on one's minds. It was
founded in Campo Tizzoro, place where mario olla lived and worked |
